영어에서 재미있다고 생각되는 표현 중 하나가 “with a vengeance”.

이 표현을 처음 만난 것은 영화 다이하드 씨리즈의 세 번 째 작품 “Die Hard with a Vengeance“에서였던같다. 이 표현을 번역하기가 쉽지 않은데 문자 그대로라면 ‘복수심을 가지고’가 되겠지만 약간 은유적 또는 중의적인 의미를 가지고 있어서 그 문맥에 따라 길게 풀어쓰자면 “와신상담(臥薪嘗膽)하는 심정으로”, “어디 한 번 당해봐라 하는 듯이” 또는 약간 더 줄여보자면 “맹렬한 기세로”, “이를 악물고”, “독기를 품고”, “보란듯이” 정도가 되지 않을까 싶다. 형용사구로 쓰일 경우에는 “지독한”, “뼛속까지” 등으로 옮길 수 있지 않을까 싶다. 그 의미가 지나치게 강한 나머지 실생활에서 자주 사용하기는 곤란한 표현이기도 하다.

출퇴근 버스와 전철 안에서 수도 없이 접하게 되는, 수술 이전과 이후를 적나라하게 비교해주는 성형외과 광고를 보면서 머리에 떠오르는 단어가 with a vengeance다. 상당한 고통과 비용에도 불구하고 그런 수술 과정을 통과하고 이전과는 다른 새로운 일상생활로 돌아오는 사람들의 심정이 바로 이 표현에 해당되지 않는가 하는 생각에서다.]]>

드물긴 하지만 간혹 남에게 알려주고 싶지 않은 책이나 가게를 접하는 경우가 있다. 그 책에서 밝혀놓은 비법이 너무 많은 사람에게 알려져 전략적 유효성이 감소되거나 가게에 너무 많은 사람이 몰려서 아늑한 분위기가 훼손되는 것을 우려하기 때문이다.

예컨대 강원도 어느 도시에 탕수육이 맛있으면서도 저렴한 가격에 양을 많이 주는 한 중국집이 있는데 누군가가 블로그에서 그 가게에 대한 정보를 퍼뜨린 바람에 오후 4시에 찾아가도 줄을 서서 기다려야 하는 형국이 되어버려 그 가게를 아끼던 사람들이 해당 블로거를 매우 심하게 원망하고 있다는 이야기를 들었다.

최근에 방문할 기회를 가진 Terarosa라는 커피점은 이미 오래 전부터 널리 알려졌을 뿐만 아니라 홈페이지까지 가지고 있으므로 이곳에 몇 마디 적는다고 크게 문제될 일은 없을 것 같지만 손님이 너무 많아 그 가게에서 만드는 빵이 오후 3시 이후에는 품절이 되어버리는 경우와 같은 일이 확대되지 않으면 하는 마음에 약간은 망설임을 가지면서 글을 쓰고 있다.

함께 방문했던 사람들의 coffee tasting. 찾아간 시간이 9시 가까운 늦은 시간이라 나는 수면장애를 피하려 카페인 함량이 적은 것으로 알려진 Dutch Coffee를 주문했는데 홍삼차와 보이차 중간쯤 되는 녹슨 물 맛이 나서 좀 별로였지만 다른 분이 주문한 라떼는 아주 특별히 맛있었다. 진열해 놓고 판매하고 있는 다양한 커피 원두.

그곳의 호밀빵이 맛있다는 이야기를 전해들었는데 저녁이라 이미 품절되고 없었다. 토요일 아침에 2-3시간 걸려서라도 찾아가서 도대체 무슨 맛인지 확인하고 싶은 심정이다.

만약 5천년 후 어느 유적지에서 위 사진과 같은 그림이 발견되었을 경우 미래의 사람들은 과연 어떤 해석을 할까? 어느 방향으로 읽어야 하나 고민하는 사람도 있겠지.

공공 시설에서 발견되는 표지 중 일부는 특정 상황에 해당되는 사람을 위한 표지인 경우가 종종 있다. 즉, 그 상황에 해당되는 이에게는 특별한 의미를 가지는 한편, 그 이외의 사람들에게는 아무 의미가 없는 그런 커뮤니케이션이다.

위 사진에서 아랫배에 + 표시가 있는 그림은 과연 무슨 신호를 던지는 것일까? 추측하기로는 주기적으로 스스로 인슐린 주사를 놓아야 하는 당뇨병 환자는 이 곳에 들어와서 주사를 놓으면 된다라는 뜻이 아닐까 싶은데 내가 그런 상황에 처한 당사자가 아니라서 확인하기 어렵다. 과연 인슐린 주사는 왼쪽 아랫배에 바늘을 찌르도록 되어 있는 것일까? (아 그렇구나.)

하지만 당뇨 환자가 아닌 경우에도 스스로 주사를 놓아야 하는 사람들에게는 위의 표지가 또 다른 의미를 가질 수 있겠지.

그 옆의 그림은 아기 기저귀를 갈 수 있도록 충분한 공간(받침대)이 제공된다라는 의미이고 그리고 위의 그림은 남녀공용일 뿐 아니라 신체장애를 가진 사람을 위한 보조장치가 설치되어 있음을 의미할 듯 싶다.

근처에 있는 다른 화장실 입구에 있는 위 그림은 친절하게도 영어와 일어로 설명문까지 달아놓았는데 그 이유가 무엇일지 궁금하다.

단지 아래 여백이 허전해서 임의로 글자를 추가한 것은 아니지 않을까 싶은데. 유아를 위한 보조의자가 있음을 그림으로만 표현해 놓으면 의미전달이 잘 안 되는 경우가 있어서일까? 설명문이 없다면 이 그림은 어떤 다른 해석이 가능할까?

마침내 애플사의 스티브 잡스가 자신의 사장직을 내려놓는다는 편지를 공개했다.

Letter from Steve Jobs

To the Apple Board of Directors and the Apple Community:

I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple’s CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come.

I hereby resign as CEO of Apple. I would like to serve, if the Board sees fit, as Chairman of the Board, director and Apple employee.

As far as my successor goes, I strongly recommend that we execute our succession plan and name Tim Cook as CEO of Apple.

I believe Apple’s brightest and most innovative days are ahead of it. And I look forward to watching and contributing to its success in a new role.

I have made some of the best friends of my life at Apple, and I thank you all for the many years of being able to work alongside you.

첫문단부터가 극적이 아닌가. 주절주절 긴 말을 하지 않으면서 꼭 해야할 말을 적절하게 표현하는 것은 본인의 역량에서 나온 것일까 전문 에디터의 도움을 받은 것일까?

지난 2년간은 이전과는 약간 다른 의미로 무척 바쁘게 지내면서 이전과는 비교도 안 되게 수 많은 영어 이메일을 작성해야 했다. 미국에서 생활한 기간이 2년여에 불과하여 실생활에 쓰이는 영어 구사에는 그렇지 않아도 부족함을 많이 느끼던 터에 주로 상대하는 정부 및 기업체의 고위직 (및 수행 실무자) 신분에 어울리는 품격있는 영어, 상황에 맞는 요령있는 표현을 제대로 소화해내지 못해 어려움을 무척 많이 겪었다. 그나마 지난 2년 사이에 어께 너머로 좀 더 고상한 영어 문장 표현을 접할 수 있어서 조금씩 개선은 되고 있다. 이런 과정을 겪으면서 그 동안 내 영어실력이 알고 보면 얼마나 부족했었고 지금도 얼마나 부족한지를 알 수 있게 되어 다행이라고 생각하고 있다. 공부는 끝이 없고 이래서 공부가 재미있는 거구나 싶다.

평소 영어는 존대말이 그다지 발달하지 않은 게 아닌가 하는 생각을 했었는데 부탁을 하고 양해를 구하는 상황에서 겸양과 주장이 교묘하게 공존하는 적절한 표현을 해야 할 때 쓰이는 다양한 영어식 존대말이 존재함을 조금씩 발견하고 있다.

동서양을 막론하고 공직에 오래 몸담았거나 외교적 활동을 많이 해온 인물들의 영어 문장에서는 간결함과 품격, 겸양과 위엄이 적절히 조화된 경우를 자주 접할 수 있었다. 이런 문장에 자주 노출되다 보면 나의 표현력도 어느 정도 향상이 될 수 있으리라는 기대를 가지고 오늘도 업무에 임한다.

Merriam Webster Dictionary defines a turning point as “a point at which a significant change occurs.” Google dictionary adds “especially one with beneficial results.”

For any moment to be a turning point, the difference between before and after the event should be substantial, and, most of the case, the period should be rather short and precise than long and extended. And usually, it does not happen very often.

In a novel, a turning point is often a climax in the story. The writer can plan ahead when and how the protagonist in the story would come to the climactic point after which the things will be so different.

While there are turning points in our lives that just happen to us, I wonder if a turning point in real life can be planned ahead or engineered. Perhaps it is possible to a certain extent. Although life is full of uncertainties, it is possible for you to make certain decisions that are most likely to make significant differences, often with predictably positive outcomes.

Here are some examples: signing up to a dance lesson, joining a sports club, reading a certain book proven to contain deep insight, learning how to swim, moving to a new city, getting a new job under a trustworthy mentor, getting a degree in higher education, quit smoking, acquiring a habit of sending thank-you notes, etc.

We are already endowed with ample examples of advice and admonitions that can be found in many books of wisdom when followed, would help us make such life-changing decisions. So I would start to give heed to that advice. I guess can make small decisions in my daily routines that would lead to a significant and positive outcome. I will soon come to a turning point in my life.]]>

What would a personal residence of an architect such as Zaha Hadid look like? How about an industrial designer such as Jonathan Ive? What would a world-famous chef such as Gordon Ramsey cook for him/herself when no one is around?

The question is what happens when a person with highly creative capability designs anything for himself/herself. How would it be different from when the work was done for clients whose tastes and values would not be the same as those of the designer. When the designer and the client are both the same person, would the result be, in general, better or worse?

More than a month ago, I canceled my accounts at me2day, Facebook, twitter, and kakaotalk.

Here are some updates:

• I write far more blog posts than before.
• Now I find it very difficult to summarize my thoughts in less than 140 characters.
• I read substantially more books now.
• Now I use my iPhone mainly for listening to music.
• I lost contact with many of my friends who mainly use Facebook for communication. I am starting to forget who my friends were.
• Someone has picked up the account id that I abandoned at twitter. A case of identity takeover.
• I now realize I couldn’t have stopped using social network services without taking as drastic measures as canceling the accounts.

I always wanted to observe how people worked. I especially wanted to survey the offices of creative types. Eciffo, now no longer in print, was the right kind of magazine for my interest but it was very hard to come by.

I am so glad that photographer Paul Barbera has put up a site Where They Create which is a visual documentation of studios and offices where creative types work. (Found out via Core77.) For instance, here is a set for the office of Frame Magazine.

I wish I could do this kind of job covering offices of various professionals, such as doctors, professors, engineers, chefs, authors, tailors, morticians, cellists, pastors, teachers, stock traders, etc.
