My employment contract with KEPCO International Nuclear Graduate School (KINGS) ends at the end of September.

I had a wonderful time working with faculty and staff members who spent endless hours launching one of the most unique graduate-level education institutions specializing in nuclear power plant engineering.

The students from 8 countries whom I met were just amazing. It was almost unbelievable to receive emails from them that were often sent in “early hours” such as between 2 AM and 5 AM. (When were they sleeping?) These students will become leading engineers who will manage and oversee important energy projects internationally.

During the two semesters since the school opened in March 2012, I taught “Professional English” and “Project Management” courses. In the classes, I employed the participative/creative teaching method based on the book written by Bob Pike, ‘Creative Training Technique Handbook‘. (A similar teaching method is also made popular by Harvard professor Eric Mazur under the name of ‘peer instruction‘.) The method was well-received by the students and it was rewarding for myself as well.

Despite all the great things about the school, I decided not to extend my contract with the school because my current situation required me to put the family in higher priority.

I consider it a wonderful blessing to have been part of the development of the school from its early stage of the establishment during which I learned a lot and traveled a lot. I also met so many people from many countries that I never even dreamed about visiting.

한창기 선생에 대한 책을 읽고 있다. 나는 평소 편집 디자인에 관한 관심이 있었는데 많은 디자이너들이 우리나라 최고의 편집 디자인의 예로 “뿌리깊은나무”와 “샘이깊은물”이라는 잡지를 거론한다는 것을 알게 되었다.

그리고 그 잡지 레이아웃 디자인에는 이상철 선생이라는 분이 관여했다는 것도 알게 되었다. 이상철 선생의 이야기 (+ 강연 동영상)도 무척 재미있는데 그 배후에 있는 잡지의 발행인 한창기라는 분도 예사롭지 않은 인물이라는 소문이 있어 관련 도서를 오래 전에 구입해 두었다가 최근에서야 읽게 된 것이다.

결혼을 하지 않고 독신으로 산 한창기 선생은 남달리 예민한 미적 감각을 가졌고 언어의 올바른 표현이 무엇인지에 대해 깊은 관심을 가졌다. 또한 시각적으로도 무척 예리하여 잡지 발행시 약간의 오류나 흐트러짐도 허용하지 않는 완벽성을 추구했다. 행여 오타가 있을까봐 매월 발행되는 잡지 원고를 처음부터 끝까지 살펴보았다.

그는 잡지 발행 이전에 브리태니커 백과사전을 판매하는 회사의 사장이었고 설득과 세일즈에 탁월한 재능을 가지고 있었다. 그 외에도 우리나라 고유의 토박이(민속) 미술품에 대한 애착이 많아 상당히 높은 수준의 미술품을 소장했다. 여러가지 면에서 스티브 잡스와 성격이 비슷했던 것은 아닐까 하는 상상도 해보게 된다.

아쉽게도 61세의 나이에 간암으로 세상을 떠나게 되는데 그의 떠남을 아쉬워하는 이들이 많아 그에 관한 책이 사후에 여러 권 발행되었다. 그가 한국 출판 역사에 중요한 업적을 남긴 비범한 인물이었던 반면 그가 작고한 이후에 일어난 (또는 일어나지 않은) 일들을 생각하면 만감이 교차한다.

잡지 샘이깊은물은 그가 떠난 후 얼마 지나지 않아 폐간된다. 그 이유는 한창기 선생에 필적할만한 발행인이 없었기 때문이라고도 본다. 그리고 그가 생전에 수집했던 많은 미술품들은 고인의 이름으로 박물관을 지어 여러 사람이 볼 수 있도록 하자는 주변 사람들의 기대에도 불구하고 진행에 많은 어려움을 겪는다. 박물관 진행이 난항을 겪게된 배경에 대해 구체적으로 아는 바 없으니 괜히 넘겨짚어 상상하는 이야기를 쓰지 않으려 한다. 다만 훌륭한 인물이 세상을 떠난 후에 그가 다 이루지 못한 일을 다른 누군가가 계속 이어 진행시키는 것이 무척 어려운 일이라는 것을 느끼게 된다.

다행스럽게도 우여곡절끝에 뿌리깊은나무 박물관이 2011년 순천에 개관되었다고 하니 방문을 해봐야겠다.

한창기 선생이 살아있는 동안 남긴 생각과 활동의 결과물은 많은 이들에게 영감과 도전을 주어 알게 모르게 새로운 발전을 촉진시키고 있다고 생각한다. 적어도 나에게는 많은 영감을 불어넣어주고 있다.

Learning something is quite easier compared to unlearning what you have already learned.

At one point, the citizens were instructed to stand to one side (to the right) to make rooms for those who need to walk up the escalator. After several years of such promotion of public behavior, the subway system administrators are trying to reverse the pattern and reeducate the public not to walk up the escalator. So far, such social reprogramming doesn’t seem to produce immediate results as people are so much used to the older way of standing to a side.

It was in 1978-79 that I had to make a pinewood derby car for the first time.

Now, 33 years later, I had to make another pinewood derby car, this time for one of my children. Here is how I made it.

I used sandpaper to give the curve. I had a severe cramp in the arm afterward.

I used manicure paints!

So I had to repaint the whole window area with thick black.

Overall, attaching the wheels was the trickiest part, and perhaps the most critical element for a successful race. My car had difficulty going straight and I still do not have a good idea of how the wheels should be attached and aligned. The car failed miserably in the race; it couldn’t even get to the finish line.

일본의 파이롯트사는 이로시즈쿠 라는 브랜드 하에 다양한 색상의 만년필 잉크를 개발하여 판매하고 있다. 이 씨리즈의 특징은 나팔꽃, 공작새, 대나무숲, 단풍, 석양, 감, 야생 포도, 가을에 피는 벚꽃 등 자연 속에서 경험되는 다양한 색상을 중심으로 구성된다는 점. 각 색상마다 그에 걸맞는 이름을 지어준 것 자체부터 인상적이다. 획에 따라 잉크의 짙은 정도가 조금씩 다르게 나타나는데 그런 미묘한 변화(variation)가 감성적인 만족감을 준다.

일상 생활에서 나를 기쁘게 하는 것 중 하나다.

잉크의 가격은 일반 잉크에 비해 꽤 비싼 편(베스트펜에서 개당 25,000원 – 2012년 9월 현재)이다.
